Chianti Classico
The market town of the Florentine Chianti: an arcaded piazza, a Saturday market and four UGAs.
Greve is the market town of the Florentine Chianti, and it still behaves like one. Life gathers in Piazza Matteotti, a triangular square lined with arcades, where butchers, wine shops and cafés sit under the loggias and a statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano — the navigator born nearby in 1485 who sailed into New York Bay in 1524 — stands in the middle. On Saturday mornings the stalls of the weekly market fill the square; in September the Expo del Chianti Classico takes it over entirely.
It is a practical base rather than a postcard: on the Chiantigiana between Florence and Siena, with good shops, simple restaurants and Le Cantine di Greve in Chianti, the self-service cellar where you can taste your way through the appellation by the glass before deciding which estates to visit.
The comune has four UGAs, more than any other in the zone. Above the town, Montefioralle is a ring of stone houses built into its own walls, traditionally linked to the Vespucci family; its small UGA climbs to around 450 metres, with vines on terraced slopes. To the east, Lamole is the smallest UGA of all — under a hundred hectares of vines on sandstone, roughly between 500 and 680 metres, the highest in Chianti Classico — and its Sangiovese is pale, floral and finely drawn. To the south lies Panzano, which has its own page.
Stay a night or two and the rhythm becomes clear: the market in the morning, a walk up to Montefioralle before lunch, a tasting in the hills in the afternoon, dinner just off the piazza.
UGA
910 ha of vineyard
The Greve valley and its slopes, on shale, Sillano formation and sandstone. Generally concentrated wines with darker fruit, gaining freshness from the higher vineyards.
UGA
95 ha of vineyard
The smallest UGA and the highest, with terraced vineyards on sandstone from about 500 metres up to around 680. Pale, floral, elegant and fresh Sangiovese.
UGA
250 ha of vineyard
The slopes around the walled hamlet above Greve, between about 250 and 450 metres, mostly on alberese with shale and pietraforte. Fruity, structured and rounded.

Boutique Villa · Restaurant Il Guardingo
Perched on the slopes above Greve, Villa Bordoni is unmistakably a labour of love — the kind of house where every room and every plate feels personally considered. Eleven rooms, a small pool, an outstanding wine list, and in its restaurant, Il Guardingo, cooking that consistently outperforms properties twice the size. The views from the terrace at sunset are worth the journey alone.

Relais de Charme · Wine Estate Borgo
A restored hilltop farmstead set directly within the Tenute del Cabreo estate, between Greve and the walled medieval hamlet of Montefioralle — birthplace of Amerigo Vespucci. Opened in 2017 by Giovanna and Francesca Folonari, whose family has been one of Tuscany’s leading wine dynasties for over a century, the property takes its name from Cabreo Il Borgo, the estate’s flagship Super Tuscan blend first produced in 1982. Eleven rooms in the converted borgo overlook vine and cypress. There is no restaurant on site: guests dine at the sister property, Pietra del Cabreo, nearby. The new Cabreo winery opened in May 2026.

Boutique hotel · Restored hilltop hamlet · Opened 2026
The newest address on this list opened in May 2026 on a fifteen-hectare estate between Greve and Panzano, twenty-five minutes from Florence. An avenue of pines leads up to three old stone farmhouses of an eleventh-century hamlet, now restored into seventeen suites and apartments, five of them designed for families. The estate keeps its olive groves, woodland and a broad lavender field where forty beehives produce the house honey.

Historic wine estate · La Pensione in Panzano · Farmhouses
Vignamaggio is one of the great old names of the Greve valley: more than four hundred hectares between Greve and Panzano, a pink villa that was the Gherardini family’s home, and a letter of 1404 that is the first record of wine made here. A long restoration is still under way. The villa itself is closed for now, along with garden and cellar tours, but the rest of the estate is open again.

Villa Bordoni’s restaurant · Tuscan osteria
Il Guardingo is the restaurant of Villa Bordoni, on a hilltop above Greve among ancient olive groves, vineyards and medieval hamlets — the kind of place that takes a little effort to reach and rewards it completely.
Enoteca & ristorante · Greve Cooking School
Established in 1984 in a historic building dating to 1802 — originally stables, later the telegraphic relay for the Grand Duchy — this family-run enoteca and ristorante sits just off Greve’s Piazza Matteotti. All the pasta is still made fresh in-house daily, carrying on the tradition of grandmother Duilia; the menu moves with the seasons: pumpkin ravioli in autumn, chestnut noodles with white ragù, Chianti risotto with pistachios and pecorino cream. The wine list is a love letter to the Gallo Nero consortium.
Historic wine estate · La Fattoria
Vignamaggio is one of the historic estates of the Greve valley, its Renaissance villa set among vineyards between Greve and Panzano. Since September 2024 its restaurant has been La Fattoria, opened by the estate’s new owners, Patrice Taravella and Emmanuelle Sebillet.
