A village of Greve in Chianti
Greve’s hilltop village above the Conca d’Oro, where organic Sangiovese and Dario Cecchini’s table meet.
Panzano is not a comune of its own but a frazione of Greve, a hilltop village a few kilometres south of the town along the Chiantigiana. Its old centre climbs to the remains of a medieval castle; below it, to the south, the slopes open into the Conca d’Oro, the “golden bowl”, an amphitheatre of vineyards that is one of the best-known views in Chianti.
Panzano has its own UGA, and its growers have long worked together. The Unione Viticoltori di Panzano, founded in 1995, brings some twenty producers under one banner, and around 90 per cent of the vineyards are farmed organically or biodynamically — an unusually high share for any wine village in Italy. The wines tend to be deep and structured: earthier on the western side, fruitier and fleshier on the eastern. Several of its estates welcome visitors by appointment, and a morning spent between two or three of them, with lunch in the village, makes one of the best days you can have in Chianti.
The village is just as famous for meat. Dario Cecchini’s butcher shop on Via XX Luglio has become a place of pilgrimage, and his restaurants nearby, Solociccia among them, serve set menus of meat at long shared tables. In September, Vino al Vino fills Piazza Bucciarelli with the tasting tables of the local estates.
Just outside the village, the Romanesque Pieve di San Leolino looks out across the valley — a quiet stop before or after the crowds.
UGA
595 ha of vineyard
The Conca d’Oro and the hills around it, between about 300 and 475 metres on pietraforte, Sillano formation and shale, around 90 per cent farmed organically. Earthy in the west, fruitier and fleshier in the east.

Della Robbia Estate · Historic Boutique Hotel
The former summer retreat of the della Robbia dynasty — the great Florentine sculptors whose terracotta works adorn the adjacent Romanesque Pieve di San Leolino — converted in 1976 into one of the first boutique hotels in Chianti. Count and Countess Aloisi de Larderel live on the property and greet guests personally, running it with the attentiveness of a private house rather than a hotel. The restaurant, Il Torchio, is set in the estate’s original wine press room; the salt-water infinity pool, lined with travertine, looks out over the golden bowl of the Conca d’Oro. No televisions in rooms.

Butcher’s table · communal set menu
Dario Cecchini — Italy’s most famous butcher, showman and Dante-reciter — hosts communal feasts at long shared tables at Solociccia, Via XX Luglio 11, on Panzano’s main street. There is no menu. A fixed price — €50 per person, wine included — buys a sequence of Florentine beef preparations, from offal and lardo to slow-cooked cuts and dripping-soaked bread, served at theatrical pace with Chianti flowing.
