Fontodi sits in the Conca d’Oro, the amphitheatre of vines that opens south of Panzano, where altitude, galestro soils and bright, dry summers make some of the most admired Sangiovese in Chianti. The Manetti family, Panzano terracotta makers for centuries, have owned it since 1968. Giovanni Manetti runs the estate and is also president of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, re-elected for a third term in 2024.
The farm covers 220 certified-organic hectares, over a hundred of them vineyard, and a herd of Chianina cattle supplies the compost. Flaccianello della Pieve, pure Sangiovese, is the estate’s best-known wine; Vigna del Sorbo is its Gran Selezione from vines over fifty-five years old. The gravity-fed cellar is open for visits by appointment on weekdays, and there is an agriturismo on the estate.

Dario Cecchini — Italy’s most famous butcher, showman and Dante-reciter — hosts communal feasts at long shared tables at Solociccia, Via XX Luglio 11, on Panzano’s main street. There is no menu. A fixed price — €50 per person, wine included — buys a sequence of Florentine beef preparations, from offal and lardo to slow-cooked cuts and dripping-soaked bread, served at theatrical pace with Chianti flowing.
